Home Runs on eBay are few and far between, but so sweet when they happen! I have had several over the years that stand out, they are what keeps me going and on the prowl for that elusive item.
What is a HOME RUN? A home run is that one of a kind, rare or unusual item that you bought for mere dollars that goes for way more than you ever thought it would. For instance, I once – years ago – found some old Poker Chips inside a metal document box that I was buying at an Estate Sale. As I checked out, I mentioned that there was something in the box, but the sales person said that they knew about it and the price included the contents. OK, document box – $10.00, sold the next week for $30.00 in my booth at the Flea Market. Now, “what are these 25 Poker Chips?”, I thought. After having them on the shelf for a year, I got tired of having them just sit in my eBay room and decided that they were Free, so to speak, so I listed them for my usual $9.99 starting bid (I actually saved one because I liked it). So I listed 24 Poker Chips of unknown origin and unknown material, but mentioned that it was possible that they were Ivory and did have what seemed to be a hand done etched crescent with a hand painted mustard band decorating the edge.
The auction went Live and after only 6 hours the price shot up to over $300.00 and I had tons of email. One potential customer told me how to determine if they were actually Ivory and they were. I added that information to my auction and waited for the last day. Those chips sold for $668.00! Talk about excited! That was enough to hook me on eBay for Life!
At OSI Rock Stars, we have an entire Forum Discussion devoted to Home Runs. We have been inspired by Mr. Customer Service – Tim Chapman and the stories of his own Home Runs. Janelle Elms, our fearless leader at OSI Rock Stars, also has several hours of training with Tim to help the other Rock Stars find their own Home Runs. We learn how to find the items that sell on eBay and how to get the most out of our listings, key words, seo, marketing, time of day for the auction to close, things I NEVER even thought about when I sold those Poker Chips. Imagine what the results would have been had I known the proper way to list them! Poker chips such as mine are valued at anywhere from $50.00 to $80.00 dollars EACH! Had I known the potential and listed my auction using all I know today, my return could have been as much as double what I actually got! That is what makes OSI Rock Stars so important to my eBay Business.

Hi Jane,
The first item I sold on eBay was a homerun for me. I found some Felco gardening shears for $7. I knew they were worth $50. I grabbed 6 of them and sold them for $35 – $48, no problem. Imagine that for a first-timer’s selling experience. I was hooked eBay ever since.

Hi,
Agree with you on Home Runs they are few and far, but when they happen it’s cool. Have had a few, but best so far was a Business Course I bought for £25.00 and sold for £375.00.

Hi Janieruth,
I love hitting home runs on ebay, consistent singles are fun too! Of course being a RockStar sure helps with the batting average.

There is nothing like the exhilaration of going “all in” and seeing it pay off big! I also really appreciated your link to Eisenstadt’s article on how to distinguish between bone, ivory, and celluloid poker chips.
